Return to Montauk

Germany, drama, 2017, 106 min.
dir. Volker Schlondorff
starring Stellan Skarsgaard, Nina Hoss, Bronagh Gallagher
The latest film by Volker Schlöndorff, the director of Die Blechtrommel and Strajk - Die Heldin von Danzig, tells the story about a writer who wishes to return to the past and rediscover himself. Max (played by excellent Stellan Skarsgård), who is a world class novelist, arrives in New York as a part of a promotional tour of his latest book. Even though Max is already almost in his autumn years, he still has a young, rebellious spirit. That is why, in the name of a broadly defined freedom he believes in, he meets his former lover, and together they set off for Long Island. But can the old passion flare up again with the same strength?
“It is a beautiful portrait of a grown-up man who is emotionally confused” – raved Owen Gleiberman of Variety magazine, who found Return to Montauk to be one of the most important premiers of this year’s film festival in Berlin. Interestingly enough, even though it is fiction, it is based on the memories of Max Frisch – a noble Swiss writer, author of the famous Homo Faber (and a friend of Volker Schlondorff).
