Set and stage decorators
As one of Poland's greatest set and stage decorators, Allan Starski boasts an Academy Award and Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards for his production design efforts for Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List (1993). He graduated from Warsaw's Academy of Fine Arts. His filmography includes many memorable productions, such as Smuga Cienia (The Shadow Line), Człowiek z Marmuru (Man of Marble), Hannibal Rising, The Pianist, Schindler’s List, Pokłosie (Aftermath), or Oliver Twist, to name but a few. He works with the most eminent Polish and international directors. On top of his production design achievements, he is a recognized stage designer and television set decorator. His major theatrical credits include Rozmowy z katem (Conversations with an Executioner) directed by Andrzej Wajda in Warsaw’s Teatr Powszechny and Ryba, Dusia, Wal i Leta (based on Pam Gems’s Dusa, Fish, Stas and Vi) directed by Agnieszka Holland in Warsaw's Ateneum Theatre. Allan Starski has won many important awards. Schindler’s List earned him an Academy Award in 1993. The jury of the 2009 Plus Camerimage Festival gave him a special Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his “unique visual sensitivity” as a production designer. The year 2013 brought him a Commander's Cross of Polonia Restituta, a major Polish order, for “outstanding services to Polish and world culture and achievements in his creative and artistic work”. In 2014 he received Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis, another national distinction.
