Scottish director, screenwriter and musician. Author of feature films: Man on a Motorcycle, Pitch Black Heist and Slow West. John Maclean graduated from Painting and Drawing at the Edinburgh College of Art and received his title at The Royal College of Art in London. After finishing studies, he earned his living by travelling around the US and delivering cars to their owners. This experience of driving through sometimes deserted, wild landscapes of the US later inspired him to direct Slow West, a western and slow-cinema film, awarded at the Sundance Film Festival. Before the beginning of his film career, Maclean was a member of a cult, indie-rock band The Beta Band, and later on, a member of The Aliens. He also created music videos for his own bands, and a music video to Hand of Man by Django Django. These are the video clips which drew the attention of Michael Fassbender and resulted in many year’s cooperation of Maclean and the popular Irish actor.
