Born and raised in NYC and transplanted to LA as a teenager, Matz’s first credit was as PA on the Carol Burnett Show, but he began his film career working for acclaimed director & visual effects pioneer, Douglas Trumbull. This tutelage gave him a foundation in physical production, post and VFX, allowing Matz to then get freelance experience in a
Number of related fields, including episodic television and commercials. This eventually led to an executive post at New World Entertainment in post production & feature film marketing.
With this foundation, Matz then ventured into the burgeoning specialty film business of the mid 1990s as an independent producer. Incorporating his entity filmsmith® in 1995, over the ensuing decade Matz produced several features in a variety of genre of film at a range of budgets, in locations, both around the U.S. (San Francisco, New York, Orlando, Las Vegas…) and around the world (South Africa, Romania, UK, Russia, Ireland, France…). Principal residence is in Santa Monica, but he holds dual citizenship in both the U.S. and Ireland. He is a member of Producers Guilds of America (Feature Council) and Directors Guild of America (as Unit Production Manager).
