First Details of PGNiG Transatlantyk Festival 2016 Programme

On June 23-30, 2016, a real feast for the film enthusiasts is to take place in Łódź (Poland). PGNiG Transatlantyk Festival is to present the most significant films of the season – a wide range of ambitious, international cinematic productions selected out of the prestigious film festivals (Cannes, Sundance and Berlinale, among others). All our screenings are free of charge – Translatlantyk Festival is open and available for everyone.
As a part of the Different America section we will present an extraordinary documentary about a colourful American LGBTQ community featured in Kiki – a film which received Teddy Award during Berlinale 2016. The 6th edition of the Festival is also a revival of Transatlantyk Art, a selection of the best documentaries dealing with the topic of art, as a part of which Francofonia will be presented – a film directed by Alexander Sokurov, one of the most renowned directors of contemporary Russia, who returns after a four-year break. The film was awarded Special Jury Prize during Venice International Film Festival.
Being 17 (France, 2016, directed by Andre Techine) and awarded Silver Bear for Best Director L'Avenir (France, 2016, directed by Mia Hansen-Love) with magnificent Isabelle Huppert will be presented as a part of Transatlantyk Panorama. Transatlantyk Independent will feature a cinematic analysis of the most significant psychological experiment in history in The Stanford Prison Experiment (USA, 2015, directed by Kyle Patrick Alvarez) and James White (USA, 2015, directed by Josh Mond) with the amazing performance of Christopher Abbott.

Just like during previous editions, the goal of Transatlantyk is to focus on the most captivating documentaries dealing with the current social issues. Song of Lahore (Pakistan/USA, 2015, directed by Scharmeen Obaid-Chinoy) is a mesmerizing story of how art and music connect two civilizations that seem to stand in a direct opposition to one another. In the Transatlantyk Confrontations section we will present Only the Dead – one of the most drastic films of this year's edition of the Festival, which investigates the origins of ISIL. Yet another extraordinary, hypnotizing film – Behemoth, which tells the story of miners living in Inner Mongolia – will be featured during Transatlantyk ECO.

Oscars 2016 is a unique overview of productions nominated for the most desired award in the category of the best Foreign Language Film and best Documentary (feature). One of the first films our audience will have a chance to see will be Theeb – a breathtaking adventure film with photography by Wolfgang Thaler (Whore's Glory, Paradies: Liebe), known from cooperation with Michael Glawogger and Ulrich Seidl.

Our bed is a true metaphysical social device. It is the most exclusive and at the same time the most open cinema in the world. That is precisely the truth I myself together with Piotr Voelkel, the founder of VOX Capital Group, have been promoting for years – says Jan A.P. Kaczmarek, founder and director of PGNiG Transatlantyk Festival. This year we will enliven Łódź by introducing Cinema in Bed. Already one week before the official opening of the Festival both the residents of the city and tourists will have an access to the spectacular Cinema in Bed. There, we will not only be screening ambitious mainstream cinematic productions but also educating, entertaining and feeding audience of all ages.

Cinema in Bed – fifty four-poster beds fit for several people with fixed individual screens will be located in the centre of Łódź as of June 16. Tickets (one bed for PLN 20 is suitable for two people) will be available for purchase as of June 9 via our website www.transatlantyk.org.
